Medellin - European and Latin Charm all in one place
Once the notorious capital of the Cocaine Drug Cartel in the 1970's, Medellin has totally transformed itself into a Renaissance City. It is as modern and upscale as any European city, but still has its Latin roots. Climate wise, they do not lie when they say it is perpetual Spring here. While traffic can be every bit as bad as any European city,it is safe to walk in most areas, and there are many buses and a light rail that rings the city. The city is very green with parks and greenery nearly everywhere, and it is World renowned for its Fiesta de Flores that happens every August. Its population is young and very fashion conscious. The food is equal to European cuisine, and fine wines are plentiful. The best part we discovered about about Colombia is that it still remains largely undiscovered by North Americans so it is not over run with tourists. With the dollar strong against the peso, it remains a bargain. The once notorious drug lords are gone and crime is not what it was in the 70's when the Cocaine trade ruled.
The first day, we met up again with Sandra who took us to see the Botanical Gardens there that were featuring the prize winning flower arrangements for each category of flowers. |
